I am so out of my league it's not funny.
No, I am not referring to the blogging thing (although that can be debated), but more specifically, this detective stuff. Today was the first day in the new division, and although the bosses were good enough to not send any jobs my way, I left with the feeling that a big, dumb guy like myself is ill equipped for the position. The added responsibilities, reams of paperwork, and pressure to perform are a little humbling.
Basically, I'm screwed.
Of course, there is still a venue where I am not out of my league: the venue of Caption Contests. I won GOP and College's Caption Contest, and took two out of the top ten spots (8th and 3rd) in GOP and the City's Weekend Caption Contest. Now, if I can only find a way to get paid by doing that . . .
You'll be fine. This is what I ask/tell my students about my content area when I get them at the beginning of the year. Did you walk out on the playing field for the first time and know everything there was about your sport? Did you ever know anything in a short period of time? NO! You have to learn the "ins" and "outs" and develop strategies for your strengths and weaknesses. Remember to ask for help, run ideas by the grizzled ones, and take a deep breath. Heck...feeling ill equipped to do something means you will care to do the right job and always work on your skills. Could be worse. You could have been elected to mayor an not know what you were doing...oh wait, someone has--for the past upteen (almost 16 years...oops forgot to include Goode). Good luck...you'll be fine.:) (Sorry to be so long-winded this evening.)
ReplyDeleteThis is the nature of promoting, I guess. You leave your "comfort zone" behind (although your last gig wasn't very comfortable) and put it all on the line. I did it about a year and a half ago and at least the days of feeling like it was a mistake are now few and far between. I still get them though, so the next time I claim to know everything, feel free to remind me of this. ;)

ReplyDeleteAw, it'll all be good. This is just like that time I decided I wanted to be a chef and they were desperate for someone so took my "Um...sure" as gold when asked if I could actually cook. People were really mean to me because the food sucked for weeks, and then I quit after about one year of constant abuse...but I was the best chef they'd ever had at some point between those first weeks and quitting (the last woman had a drug problem though).
