Put down your arms, boys. You stunk up the joint.
Let me start by saying that I care as much about The Grammys as I do about Al Gore’s insipid documentary about global warming. However, when the missus told me that The Police were reuniting for a live performance, it piqued my interest. I mean, it’s The Police; they couldn’t possibly disappoint, could they?
They could and they did.
Despite a myriad of classic songs, Sting and the boys decided to perform Roxanne, which in my opinion, is the worst of their hits. It also didn’t help that their Grammy performance of Roxanne was a slow, almost a Capella version that definitely didn’t rock, and certainly didn’t make me excited to see them when they tour.
Instead, The Police performed Roxanne like the aged rock stars they have become. And that saddens me. Here, Sting squandered away a chance to bring the house down with a kickass version of Synchronicity or a ripping performance of Message in a Bottle. They needed something that would energize their base, and send people rushing to the ticket brokers. Roxanne will not do that, at least not the Muzak version of the song they performed last night.
Pretty weak, fellas.
