Mitt Romney: "Freedon Requires Religion"

GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney gave a speech today on faith in America. In case you have been living in a cave in Pakistan, Romney is a Mormon.
Romney, seeking to become the first Mormon president, explained how his faith would affect his presidency in his speech at former President George H. W. Bush's presidential library at Texas A&M University.

"There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders," Romney said.

"Freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone," he said. (H/T - CNN.com)
Well played, Mitt. Any student of history knows full well that the founding fathers wanted to create a nation that had its roots in Judeo-Christian ideals. I always shake my head when people argue that the "separation of Church and State" - that phrase is not in the Constitution, by the way - means that there can be no mention of religion in any public building. If fact, that idea was discussed because the founders did not want a "State religion," because many of the Church leaders in England were dictating government policy. But I digress.

Many voters have a problem with Romney because he is a Mormon. (Cue spooky Mormon music.) Ironically, many of these same voters cry foul when someone is discriminated against due to race, color, or illegal immigrant status. Refuse to vote for someone because of his religion? Oh, that's okay. Ignorance spawns fear, and too many people know too little about the Mormon faith. If Romney is elected, he will not go on a marrying spree. He will not put up a 50-foot statue of Joseph Smith on the White House lawn. He will not make The Book of Mormon required reading in the nation's schools.

Everyone had a problem with electing a Roman Catholic, too. Ask them about John F. Kennedy now, and they will gush and fawn over him until the cows come home.
