The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything

Sometimes when you're a parent, you have to do things you normally wouldn't (or wouldn't want to) do. When you're a movie buff like me, you sometimes have to sit through some boring kiddie drek. You do it anyway, because you know that it's not about you; it's about the kids.

Strangely enough, some of the films we have taken the boys to see of late have been pretty damned entertaining. Cars comes to mind. After seeing The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie yesterday, I can add that one to the list, too.

I know what you're thinking: Wyatt, that movie seems really lame. For adults, this is probably true, but if you see it for what it is, a great kids movie with absolutely no questionable subject matter whatsoever, you can appreciate it further. Pirates tells the (Veggie)Tale of Elliot, Sedgewick, and George, three lowly employees at a pirate-themed dinner theater who are recruited to rescue a princess and save a kingdom. Although the threesome are the furthest thing from heroes, they evolve into honorable sailors by doing the right thing.

The movie was very kid-friendly, as well as being bladder-friendly at an hour and twenty-five minutes. There were a few hysterical scenes where everyone in the theater laughed, and if you go, stay until the credits are over: you don't want to miss the great spoof of the B-52's Rock Lobster.

Normally, I would give Pirates three stars out of five, but after seeing my boys' reactions, I have to give it a four and a half. It you have children, this film is for you.
