Yeah, it's figure skating, but this is absolute bulls**t! Read on:
The U.S. Figure Skating International Committee announced today the nomination of Sasha Cohen, Kimmie Meissner, and Michele Kwan to the 2006 United States Olympic Team, pending USOC approval. Cohen and Meissner placed first and second at the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Louis, Mo., respectively.
“The International Committee considered all of the relevant information and picked the best possible U.S. Olympic Team to represent the United States in Torino,” International Committee Chair Bob Horen said. “We believe that Sasha, Kimmie and Michelle will compete in a manner that will make our country proud.”
Cohen won her first U.S. title at the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships Saturday night.
Meissner finished second at the 2006 U.S. Championships, her best placement at the event. “It's just crazy,” said Meissner about earning an Olympic Team berth. “I've been dreaming about this for a very long time. It's just awesome.
**Kwan submitted a petition in accordance with the 2006 U.S. Olympic Athlete Selection Procedures to request the nomination, as she was unable to compete at the event due to injury.**
So, Michelle Kwan wants to go to the Olympics again, and even though she couldn't compete in the Championships, the Olympic Committee puts her on the team - ousting third place finisher Emily Hughes (pictured)??? These clods should get a toe pick to the groin. OSOC? More like U-SUC.
It sucks, but those are the accepted rules and procedures in the most political and unfair of all sports. I watched most of the final programs Saturday night. The nicest parts were watching a sick Cohen perform without excuse, Emily Hughes being cheered on by her big sis, Sarah, and watching a newbie like the young lady from Philly...who did very well for herself. Kwan should get on with her life. She needs to go pro or something.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect from figure skating??!! The whole sport is screwed!! Lets see.... your american, and I'm a russian judge so you get no points while my skater who sucks get all the points!!
ReplyDeleteSame situation happened when Nancy Kerrigan got hit on the leg and the person left behind that time? Thirteen year old Michelle Kwan. A groin injury is alittle more than a cold! Cohen is good but always seems to mess up when it counts. I'd like to see Michelle have one more chance!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the judging stinks!
Which is my whole beef. I usually watch the ladies' programs during the Olympics (Mmm . . . Katerina Witt!), but the judging is ridiculous. On top of that, Hughes gets screwed because Kwan wants to try again. Brutal!
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with you about Michelle--surprise! She has spent a big chunk of her 25 yrs training and skating for the US and I think she deserves one last chance at the Olympics. She has said she won't go if she feels like she can't make it. Hughes is young enough that she'll have another chance. I hope she makes it and I'll be pulling for her to win the gold! The skaters don't control the judges! Not brutal, cowboy, real life!
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of it has to do with Kwan's stature in the skating community. She'll bring in the ratings and heightened interest. How old is the girl who didn't make it? They probably figure she'll get her chance next time. It's true, it's unfair, but RT is right in saying it's one of the most political and unfair sports. I still enjoy watching, however.
ReplyDeleteLin & Pam - Hughes is young enough for another shot, but how many shots are they gonna give Kwan to win the damned gold??? And what happens if she blows it again? Are we gonna have to endure her in 2010? Where does it end?
ReplyDeleteDon't be so harsh on Michelle, suga! Let it go, just let it go! Take a deep breath, close your eyes and blow it out, shake your shoulders, and everything down to your feet. C'mon, humor me! I'm just tryin' to relieve some stress, honest! Now, would this be grief or gushy? BIG SMILE!!
ReplyDeleteDon't ya feel better, now?! I do!
