An Inauspicious Debut

My guys (in red) hitting the post in the second period.

As I mentioned yesterday, our Fall hockey season began last night. Even with the criminally short notice, only one skater couldn't make the game, so that was a good sign. We met in the locker room, and talked about our off-season. The team we were playing, The Rink Rats, were wearing blue jerseys, and since our new jerseys (black) hadn't arrived yet, we were stuck wearing the dreaded red pinnies. Not that we cared: we just wanted to get out on the ice.

And since I am still a cripple, I had the pleasure of helping Badger on with his new goalie pads, buying Vinnie new hockey socks - he only brought one - and collecting some league fees from the guys. It was oh so exciting, and much better than actually playing the game. /Snark.

I also brought the digital camera to take a few action shots for the blog. But, since every shot I took in the rink came out dark, I switched to video instead. The top video shows Mike winning a face-off, taking a slap shot, and hitting the pipe. Randal is on the left side of the shot in the blue jersey, white helmet, and red pinnie.

The bottom video is all Vinnie Antonelli. He's the clown with one baby blue sock and one red sock. Notice his hustle in the third period. Heh. Sorry, Vin, but you looked really slow on the video.

Although the team played pretty well overall, we gave up way too many breakaways. Badger couldn't do much on any of those goals except to slam his stick against the net. Randal's line had a ton of opportunities, but they were hitting posts, the goalie, and everything in between. Unfortunately, the Rink Rats scored with 2.3 seconds remaining in the game, to take a 4-3 victory. And yes, that goal was also the result of a breakaway. The good news is that we are only going to get better, and it's a long season.

Hopefully, I'll be able to play in it sometime.
