Well, That Didn't Take Long

My division had the first homicide of the year, a mere five hours after 2015 arrived.

A 19-year-old was killed Thursday morning during a shooting in the Olney section of Northwest Philadelphia.

The victim was shot in the head around 5:15 a.m. inside a home on the 5800 block of North Philip Street. Medics pronounced him dead on the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

This is on top of the hundreds of gunshots fired when the clock struck twelve, because why bang pots and pans when you can just let off a few rounds into the air?

  1. When I was growing up, the neighbor kid across the street would go out at midnight New Years Eve and fire one round out of a shotgun straight up, in the middle of the street. At least once that I recall, the shot was not quite straight up, and popped the street light. This was on an active trolley line(high voltage DC line over his head), next to a church and down the street from a hospital.
    Fun times.
    Stay safe

  2. I think I've seen the sign you have at the top of the post. Either driving north on 95 before Cottman or while heading north on the boulevard before the Wingohocking exit. It's going to be a long year in Philadelphia. Stay safe.

  3. Lergnom - KYW 1060 - the local all-news station - put out reminders a few times every hour to not shoot in the air because... well, bullets come down.

Jack - Broad & Wingo is arguably the most violent intersection in the city.

And sometimes the celebratory rounds never even make it into the air...
